Twinkling stars, ocean waves and marvellous creatures. Vivid Sydney 2024

Join us in celebrating the whimsical, breathtaking, and extraordinary moments that make up our everyday lives. Picture this: twinkling stars, crashing ocean waves, and fantastical creatures coming to life on the façade of the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia during Vivid Sydney, courtesy of MCA Collection artist Guan Wei.

Renowned Chinese Australian artist Guan Wei invites you on a journey from the depths of the ocean to the vast expanse of the night sky with his 2024 MCA Vivid Commission, "Sea, Sand and Stars." Get ready to encounter deep sea monsters, sunbathers, astronauts, and even aliens in this delightful animation that will transform the MCA façade. From the ordinary to the extraordinary, Guan Wei's work captures the essence of life's most humorous, beautiful, and extraordinary moments.

With over 35 years of experience, Guan Wei has explored the complexities of human existence through his art, drawing inspiration from his life in both Australia and China. Collaborating with Spinifex Group, Guan Wei's first light projection takes you on a journey through a day, starting with the appearance of the morning star.

"Sea, Sand and Stars" brings together imagery from some of Guan Wei's most iconic painting series, including "Feng Shui" (2004), "Play on the Beach" (2011), "Twinkling Galaxies" (2012), and "Divine Comedy" (2019). Don't miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in a world where the ordinary becomes extraordinary and the fantastical becomes reality.
